Yesterday and Today
Today’s Weissenfelser Draht-Ketten-Nagel GmbH – DRAKENA for short – looks back on a company history spanning more than 120 years. Industrial nail production at the Weißenfels site began in 1891 under the name “Nollesche Werke,” initially focusing on shoe tacks and shoe nails for the local footwear industry. Growing demand quickly led to an expansion of the product range and the development of in-house machinery, including a world-first machine for the production of sheet metal tacks. With the modernization of agriculture in the early 20th century, the company began producing chains – with great success, as demonstrated by the un-welded “Viktor chains,” manufactured under patent for the global market. Expansion into South American and Middle Eastern markets followed naturally. After the Second World War, production was resumed as a state-owned enterprise. The product portfolio included the manufacture of all types of wire, nails for construction purposes, and chains primarily for ship equipment.
DRAKENA GmbH in its current form was established in 1993 following the privatization of the company through a management buy-out (MBO). The high-quality and comprehensive range of services was maintained and further expanded to include customized solutions across all product groups. As an owner-managed, medium-sized company with skilled and motivated employees, as well as a modern and efficient machinery park, we serve customers worldwide. Nearly 9,000 tons of processed steel leave our plant each year, with current annual revenues of around €11 million and growing. At our 38,000 m² site in Weißenfels, we operate not only our production facilities but also a large warehousing and logistics area supported by our own IT system.
We also benefit from the excellent infrastructure in the Halle/Leipzig region. Product innovation has a long tradition at DRAKENA.
